Volodymyr Zelensky faces tricky task of dealing with Kremlin

The Times

Despite attempts by opponents to portray him as being soft on Russia, Ukraine is expected to continue on a pro-western path with Volodymyr Zelensky as president, seeking strong ties with the United States, Britain and other European states.

Ivan Bakanov, Mr Zelensky’s campaign chief, led a team that spent three days in Washington last week holding meetings at the White House, the State Department and Congress. The team, he said, also compared notes with the 2020 campaign of President Trump — another outsider with zero political experience when elected.

Mr Bakanov told The Times they were warmly received in the US but officials “made it clear that international support would be contingent on us fighting corruption. And that is one of our major aims.”
